An innovative analysis of 337 media reports has estimated the risk of SARS-CoV-2 attack rate in German refugee accommodation centres during the first wave of the pandemic at 13%, beginning after the detection of the first case. Among the 101 outbreaks examined, 75% of the affected facilities were placed under mass quarantine, a measure linked to higher infection rates. This study not only sheds light on the impact of mass quarantine but also highlights the crucial role of media as a valuable data source during pandemics.
