Nurses play a central role in the healthcare of refugees. Most models of care are structured as parallel, specialised services – separate from mainstream healthcare and often time-limited or focused on specific conditions. As this study shows, nurses take on a broad range of responsibilities within these models: from clinical care and coordination to education and administration. Specially trained nurses in particular can help facilitate the gradual integration of refugees into mainstream healthcare. The findings highlight the importance of targeted training and education, as well as greater consideration of nursing professionals in healthcare planning for this population.
